Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features Chad’s coat of arms on both halves of a Yin-Yang symbol. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD,” “5000 FRANCS CFA,” and “2023.”
Reverse
The reverse side of the coin features Auspicious Beasts on both sides of a Yin-Yang symbol: a serpentine Dragon appears on the Yang half while a Phoenix is featured in a dramatic wings-out posture on the Yin half.
History
Based on constellations that represent the guardians of the four cardinal directions, the Four Auspicious Beasts of ancient Chinese tradition are symbolic of seasons, elements and social virtues. The Azure Dragon, known to the West simply as the Dragon, is the guardian of the East and a symbol of power and authority. The Vermilion Bird, also known as the Phoenix, guards the South and symbolizes grace and benevolence. Moving in harmony with the opposing but complementary forces of Yang and Yin, they bless love and marriage, and the interlocking design of the coin’s shaped components emphasizes that dynamic.
