Obverse

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2024 1/20 oz Silver Libertad Coin features Winged Victory in three-quarter relief. She is depicted with a laurel wreath raised in her right hand and broken chains in her left, with the mountain peaks appearing in the background.

History

The reverse of the coin depicts the Victory Column with Winged Victory, along with the majestic Popocatpetl and Iztaccihuatl mountains. These volcanoes are steeped in legend and mythology. According to Aztec folklore, Iztacchuatl was a princess who fell in love with a warrior named Popocatpetl. When she was falsely told that her lover had died in battle, she died of grief. Upon his return, Popocatpetl was heartbroken and carried her body to the top of a mountain, where he knelt by her side with a torch, watching over her for eternity. The gods, moved by their love, turned them into mountains.
