History
Alderney, the Channel Island to the coast of Normandy, France, was deeply impacted by World War II. The island’s native population of 1,500 people were evacuated to the British mainland prior to the German occupation of the strategic island in the English Channel, but the impacts of that evacuation and occupation lingered for years.
After the liberation of Alderney in May 1945, the evacuated population began to return. The islanders faced the challenge of rebuilding their homes, their lives, and the very island itself, in the aftermath of the occupation. has issued this commemorative coin to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.
