Wombats are unique marsupials native to Australia, distinguished by their solid build and burrowing habits. They belong to the family Vombatidae and include three living species: the common wombat and two hairy-nosed varieties. Though they may appear cuddly, wombats are robust animals with short, strong legs that make them excellent diggers. Currently, you can find 2024 1 oz Australian Silver Wombat Coins available at BGASC.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2024 Australian Silver Wombats is a striking image of His Majesty King Charles III. Created by designer Dan Thorne, this left-profile bust shows the King without a crown, representing the first-ever portrait of His Majesty on Australian coinage.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Silver Wombat Coins features a wombat alongside its young joey. One fascinating characteristic of wombats is their pouch, which opens towards the back. This design prevents dirt from getting inside while they dig, allowing their joeys to develop safely in the pouch for several months before they venture out.

History

Wombats play a crucial role in their ecosystem as engineers of the environment. Their extensive burrow systems, which can reach up to 30 meters long, provide homes for other animals and contribute to soil aeration. These well-constructed burrows can withstand bushfires, offering shelter for wombats and other species during difficult conditions.
