In 2024, the US Mint commemorates the 230th anniversary of the first-ever dollar coin with a special gold release. Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin shows a right-profile portrait of Liberty, designed by Robert Scot. This famous design is named for Libertys flowing hair. Scot, who served as the US Mints first Chief Engraver, created the original Flowing Hair Dollar and many other early American coin designs.
Reverse
On the reverse side, the 2024 1 oz Proof Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin features the original heraldic eagle design from the US Mint. The eagle is perched on a wreath, with edge-lettering that reads HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.
History
The Flowing Hair Dollar, minted in 1794 and 1795, was the first official silver dollar issued by the US federal government. The obverse depicted Liberty with flowing hair, symbolizing the nations ideals of freedom. The reverse featured an eagle surrounded by a wreath. Despite a short production run, with only around 160,000 coins struck, the Flowing Hair Dollar played a pivotal role in the creation of Americas monetary system.
