This left-profile effigy, showing His Majesty without a crown, marks the first time King Charles III has appeared on these coins, following the Commonwealth’s tradition of adjusting monarch portraits. Male monarchs are typically depicted without crowns after taking the throne.

The lion in the foreground is shaded in blue and purple, while the one in the background is adorned with red and orange hues. This striking design captures the essence of these powerful protectors.

History

The placement of imperial guardian lions was highly strategic, with the statues typically positioned at the entrance or perimeter of a building or complex to ward off evil spirits and protect the space within. The lions were also believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and longevity to the occupants and visitors of the site.
