Obverse
The obverse of the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin features one of two designs. One design shows a man chiseling rock, while another design, mostly seen between 1918 and 1928, features a bust of Simon Bolivar, the key figure in Colombias fight for independence and the nations founder. The Bolivar design was introduced in 1918 to mark the 100th anniversary of his victory in the war for independence. Both designs include the inscription Republica Colombia at the top, with the coins date below.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin, youll find the Colombian coat of arms, with the coins denomination displayed above.
History
First introduced in 1880, the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin was created when Colombia adopted the gold standard. These coins were designed to match the British Gold Sovereign in terms of gold content and weight, each containing .2355 Troy oz of 22-karat gold, which equals 91.67% gold purity. Between 1907 and 1931, these coins were tied to the British Pound at a rate of 1 Pound sterling to 5 Pesos. After Britain left the gold standard, the coins were pegged to the US dollar, which remained gold-backed until 1933.
