{{/presale}}Explore the legacy of the smallest denomination in the Pre-33 US Eagle Series with the Quarter Eagle, a gold coin with a $2.50 face value. Originating in 1796 from the United States Mint, these coins encapsulate the nation’s history from its early days through the Roaring 20s. The enduring Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle design is now accessible for purchase on BGASC.
Highlights:
All of our Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle Coins at BGASC are in Mint State 66 condition. These coins exhibit above-average luster with minimal contact marks, usually no more than three or four. Under magnification, you might notice a few light hairlines and one or two light scuff marks.
Obverse
Gobrecht’s eloquent portrayal of Lady Liberty graces the obverse side of the $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle. Liberty is depicted in a left-profile bust, adorned with a coronet crown and surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The date mark is discreetly placed beneath Liberty’s bust.
Reverse
Flip to the reverse side, and you’ll find Gobrecht’s rendition of the heraldic eagle on Pre-33 Liberty Quarter Eagles. The bald eagle takes center stage, facing forward and accompanied by the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Essential details such as the nation of issue and face value are engraved on this side.
History
While the Gold Quarter Eagle remained in circulation in the United States from 1796 to 1929, it was not always actively struck by the US Mint. In some cases, the number of mints striking the coins in a given year would fluctuate, with some mints taken off production of the coins or closed entirely. There were no new Gold Quarter Eagles struck between 1809-1820 and 1916-1924, though the coins remained in circulation during both periods.
