All of these Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Coins are available in About Uncirculated condition. Typically, coins in this state correspond to a grade ranging from 50-58 on the Sheldon scale. AU coins exhibit extremely light or minimal friction on the highest relief points, coupled with medium to near-full mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles showcases a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. Crafted by James B. Longacre in 1849, this design captures Liberty adorned with a coronet crown, encircled by a ring of 13 stars.
Reverse
Flipping to the reverse of the Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle, you’ll find the Great Seal of the United States. This rendition of the heraldic eagle presents the bald eagle in a frontal pose, featuring the US national shield on its chest. Clutched within its talons are the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. In the Type 2 design, a significant addition is the inclusion of the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST,” positioned within the circle of stars above the eagle’s head. This addition came about after the Civil War, symbolizing national unity.
History
The Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins underwent three distinct reverse design variations. While all coins featured the Great Seal of the United States, the differences were found in the lettering on the reverse side. The Type 2 design emerged in the aftermath of the US Civil War and had the shortest circulation period among the three, spanning only a decade.
