Each 1/4 oz War of 1812 Gold Coin listed here originates from the Royal Canadian Mint. Interestingly, the first shots of the War of 1812 were fired in 1811 during the Battle of Tippecanoe in Indiana. The war concluded weeks after a cease-fire was agreed upon when Americans defeated a British attack force in New Orleans.
These War of 1812 coins were minted in 2012 by the Royal Canadian Mint and issued until April 2013. They bear a special marking on the reverse side, denoting the 200th anniversary of this significant conflict, with an engraving that reads 1812-2012.
Obverse
The obverse side of the oz War of 1812 Gold Coin features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This image, designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, is the second design of a monarch on Canadian coins completed by a Canadian artist.
Reverse
On the reverse of the War of 1812 Gold Coins, you’ll find the image of two heraldic beasts. The American Eagle is on the right, and the English Lion is on the left, with a battle shield bearing a maple leaf in between, symbolizing the French-Canadian nationals who fought on the side of the British forces.

At just two decades into its existence as an independent nation, the United States was facing British naval aggressions on the high seas. The War of 1812 is often referred to as a “Second War of Independence” by Americans, as it resulted in the United States successfully repelling British aggressions.
